Shane Claiborne joins us this week for the podcast. Shane is his usual hospitable, nicest guy in the world, self. He waxes poetic with us about justice, poverty, and economics with his east Tennessee southern drawl.

At one point, Nick accused Shane of spamming him for money after his home burned to the ground. Which almost made Shane cry. But Nick recovered and apologized and we all moved ahead better people because of it.

If you know anything about Shane, you know that he’s a stand up guy and beyond gracious. Josh even tried to bait him into civil disobedience talk once and Shane stayed above the fray as usual. For more information about Shane, check out his community over at thesimpleway.com.

You can also check out the litany we mentioned that Shane did at Catalyst this past year. Or you can watch it in the video player on our front page.

This podcast is a conversation between Josh and Chris Haw from the Camden House in Camden New Jersey. Chris is the co-author of the upcoming book, Jesus for President, with Shane Claiborne. This podcast was recorded while Josh was at the A Sustainable Faith Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida at the beginning of February. As I say in the intro, I think Chris is one of the most insightful and provocative people that I’ve talked to in the past couple of years. What he’s thinking in relationship to the church’s role in response to government, economics, and civil engagement is some of the most deep thinking that is out there today. I hesitate to use the word cutting edge, because I think it’s a rediscovery of Jesus’ relationship to empire. But I will be so bold as to say that I think what he’s working through right now is what the rest of us will begin to wrestle with 10 years from now. And into the future. So in that respect . . . I think he’s way ahead of the game in imagining what a post-oil, sustainable world looks like in relationship to country and allegiance.

He also co-wrote the litany that Shane shared at the Catalyst conference last year that caused a bit of a ruckus in the evangelical world. You can find that litany in the sidebar in our YouTube player.

I don’t have much to put in the show notes. Chris and everyone involved at the Camden House have a low internet presence, which I think is the way they like it so that people can’t emulate a “model”.

But you can find Chris’ blog here, although I’m not entirely sure it even gets updated.

You can check out the promo stuff for JesusForPresident and to find out more about the tour by going here.
