This week we have Cliff Shiepe talking about self publishing his new novel Cliff Falls.

Cliff has an interesting life that mixes ministry with the entertainment industry and his first novel puts one foot in each of those spheres. What I found most interesting about Cliff’s story is that he did not intend to write a novel and when it was all said and done, he did all the work and it took him ten years. I thought that was a powerful story for those of us anxious to get some thoughts on paper and get them out there.

Cliff gives some good advise for artists/writers and he talks about his novel.

ep 173 – Carlton Mackey and 17 Degrees Ain’t Nothing

In this interview Josh talks with Cartlon Mackey about his most recent project 17 Degrees Ain’t Nothing. Carlton Mackey is the Assistant Director of the D. Abbott Turner Program in Ethics and Servant Leadership and the Chair of the Ethics & the Arts Initiative for the Emory University Center for Ethics. Carlton serves on the Board of Directors for the Wonderroot Community Arts Center and the Advisory Board for the Youth Theological Initiative. Carlton is also a professional photographer and local filmmaker. He was awarded a grant from the Emory University Center for Creativity and the Arts to create a photography exhibit to accompany his documentary 17 DEGREES AIN’T NOTHING, an intimate profile of 5 individuals living on the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. For this work, Carlton was awarded the first Emory College for Creativity & Arts Emory University and Healthcare Staff Creativity and the Arts Award.

This week Nick talks to Rev. Dr. Amy Laura Hall, who is an Associate Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke Divinity School.

They talk about the Proper 29 Project.

The project can be summed up in this bit from their web page:

Proper 29 Project has been set up to provide a forum for homiletic engagement with our moral culpability as Christians in the United States for civilian deaths and torture in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for witnessing to the gospel of Jesus Christ as we process the news that British, U.S., and Iraqi forces have killed over 66,000 civilians. We acknowledge and lament our corporate responsibility for these acts. Knowing that we all stand under God’s judgment, we hope to speak the truth without creating dichotomies which lessen our culpability.

The two talk bout Rachel’s life growing up in fundamentalist Christianity and her process of encountering new questions from unsuspecting places; namely other people’s stories. This is a fun and light-hearted podcast that is surely to connect with anyone who’s looking for a conversation about how to handle faith when all sure footing seems to be slipping away. Indeed, as Rachel jokes, this is a Donald Miller kind of read.
