This week we are posting a podcast that was recorded by Michael Dowd, author of Thank God for Evolution, on his podcast

After I listened to this podcast, I asked Michael if we could re-post it, I don’t know how many of you may have had the chance to catch it on his podcast, so here it is.

I was impressed.

Here are the original show notes:

Michael Dowd steps up to the microphone to extemporaneously present his boldest ideas yet: “I want to encourage religious people not to get defensive when the New Atheists are attacking religion or attacking concepts of God. Instead, recognize that they are fulfilling the role of a prophet. Traditionally, a religious prophet is someone who has sensed what is real in the moment and what is emerging and then has given voice to what is emerging and what is real in a way that was challenging, that was pointed, that was prophetic. Prophets were not typically your most polite people. They were sometimes curmudgeons. They were sometimes quirky. But they spoke with the authority of reality.” Dowd continues, “The religion that the New Atheists are attacking is otherworldly, superstitious religion when it’s interpreted as objectively real. And that’s not where the power of our religious language lies. . . So long as religious people interpret our scriptures literally, interpret our miracles literally, interpret our language about God and all our traditions literally, we deserve to be the brunt of attacks by the true prophets of our age, which are the New Atheists, who are the defenders of objective reality.” (You can also access online the audio of Dowd reciting the preface of his book.)

Kimberly Knight is a pastor of a congregation in Second Life, an online avatar driven community.

This conversation stemmed from some buzzing discussion about what is church and what is virtual church.

Zach Lind and I did a rantcast about it a few months back and then some discussion flowed out of that. I think that podcast was started by an article on Out of Ur. All of that to say it was a busy conversation and here is some follow up with a practitioner.

Check out Kimberly’s personal blog here and the Second Life communities site here

This episode is a remix back from 2007. It’s been a while and you will notice that the first co-host of the podcast, Josh Brown, is doing the interviewing. So here it is back from the archives and stored on the new server.

IT WAS BOUND to happen. The Nick & Josh Podcast scooped the Almighty. Oprah that is. Last Tuesday I recorded a podcast with one of the co-founders of Kiva. And Friday they went into Oprah’s studio to record Tuesday’s Oprah television show. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they mentioned just how cool The Nick & Josh Podcast was/is.

But besides scooping Oprah, we had a great conversation with Jessica Jackley Flannery of Kiva (co-founder with her husband Matt). If you’re not familiar with Kiva . . . this is a great chance to get to know them and what they’re about. And if you’re already a fan and partner . . . then you can hear Jessica talk about a variety of things including social networking in giving, flattened relational models, the power of women in power, and Kiva’s leveraging of their relationships with big business Silicon Valley giants for their role in micro-loans.

Unfortunately, Nick couldn’t make this podcast and as usually is the case when I fly solo, I struggle to sound coherent and intelligent. He is truly worthy to be Wayne while I am nothing but Garth. But despite my suck-i-ness in “interviewing” . . . I did get to talk to somebody whose going to talk to Oprah . . . and that’s got to count for something right?

Check it out.
