ep 7.7 - Dr. Timothy Paul Jones
March 22, 2008
Scratch up another ‘Dr.’ for The Nick and Josh Podcast. This time we have Dr. Timothy Paul Jones who authored a book called Misquoting Truth it was a refutation to Bart Ehrman’s Bestselling Misquoting Jesus. We all know that Nick is a Bart Ehrman fanboy, so Nick gets to read from the other side - a Southern Baptist Professor that takes another look at the story’s and facts that Ehrman used in his epic book. The books compliment each other well and I think you will enjoy the interview.

[…] We’ve got a new podcast up with Dr. Timothy Paul Jones. Nick did the interview and I rather enjoyed it. Nice give and take. Kudos to Nick. […]
great interview. props to nick. now all you need to do is setup a friendly conversation/debate with ehrman and jones. i’d love to see/hear that.
Dude, I just want to get Ehrman to come on. No need for debate.
-Nick
that would be an excellent follow-up. no luck?
Great interview! I was pleasantly suprised by Dr. Jones. Being a big Ehrman fan myself, I would always cringe when I would see “Misquoting Truth” in the bookstore. But Dr. Jones seems not be the religious apologist tightwod that I had assumed. I think I might actually pick up a copy of his book.
So I buy a 6 pack to anyone who can hook me up with an interview with Bart.
Challenge extended. . . prove you have more connections than me!
Hey, Justin, please remember that authors don’t always get to choose their book titles or the ways in which the books are presented—that happens in marketing departments. Not being critical of IVP here at all; I appreciate everything they’ve done, and they did a phenomenal job with this book … but marketing aims a book at the best possible target market, which in this case was Christians who want a response to Ehrman’s ideas.
Dr. Jones, Yeah I am learning more and more to accept the old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover.” I didn’t mean my comment to be flipantly critical or rude. Most assumptions based on brief impressions are lousy assumptions. I think the guys at the this podcast do a good job bringing their interviewees into an honest light, past whatever base assumptions our consumer society tends to (sometimes) create. I thoroughly enjoyed the your interview and look forward to wrestling with your book when I get the chance.
No offense taken—many apologetics texts are written with unnecessary rancor; so, the assumption is a well-founded one. And, yeah, Nick and Josh both do a great job of working through to people’s real attitudes. I don’t typically contact anyone to ask them to interview me—usually they do it on their own or publicists take care of it. But I actually asked to be on the Nick and Josh Podcast, simply because I enjoy their approach even at the points when I disagree with their conclusions.
Dr. Jones,
If I had more aquaintances/friends within the church I may still be going to church.
Good job, approaches like yours will go far to build bridges between divergent thoughts in areas like this.
Great interview. I have not heard of Ehrman before, maybe being a Brit I don’t follow the NYT bestsellers!
Anyway, I still have LOTS of issues with the bible and I agree that we need to be exposed to the issues within our churches or, like has happened to me, we find out after being a Christian for several years that the bible did’nt just do a Joseph Smith! Then you have a issue with faith cus you have been told to but your faith in the infallibility of the bible.
Thanks again… may get both books and mess my head/faith up even more!
